What happens when social justice concepts move from adult activism into teacher education and the classroom? In this Common Core Diva Deep-Dive, Lynne Taylor joins The Reason We Learn to examine Social Justice for the Sensitive Soul and the ideas it promotes around “mattering,” “flourishing,” and the expectation that individuals must “do the work.” Although the book is written for adults, the discussion examines its recommendation among teachers and teacher educators and asks whether its concepts could influence classroom culture, educator training, and ultimately students. From social justice education and teacher preparation to ideological influence and parental awareness, this conversation encourages families and educators to investigate not only what children are being taught, but also the ideas shaping the adults who teach them.
In this episode of Common Core Diva Deep-Dive, Lynne and I go through the book Social Justice for the Sensitive Soul. This is a book geared towards adults, however it is recommended to teachers by their teacher educators and colleagues. As with most things that started off being for adults (like Stamped from the Beginning, and the 1619 Project), this, or ideas from it, will likely (if they haven’t already) end up in schools.
Ideas I’ve talked about on this channel like “mattering” and “flourishing” are big in this book, as is the premise that we ALL must “do the work” in order to flourish, even if it means adapting to the work. There is no option to say NO (and still flourish).
