Are education vouchers and school choice really about giving parents greater freedom—or could accepting government funding ultimately bring greater government control? In Education Vouchers: Bait and Switch, we examine the promises surrounding school vouchers, Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), tax-credit programs, and other taxpayer-funded approaches to educational choice. While these programs are often promoted as ways to help families escape an education system that no longer meets their needs, important questions remain about accountability, regulations, government funding, private schools, homeschooling, and parental control. Before accepting the promise of “money following the child,” parents and taxpayers should understand what may follow the money—and whether today’s educational freedom could become tomorrow’s government oversight.
