What happens when the neighborhood school becomes a one-stop center for education, health care, mental health, behavioral services, family support, workforce preparation, and government-funded community programs? In this presentation, Common Core Diva Lynne Taylor examines what she calls “meducation”—the growing integration of medical, mental-health, behavioral-health, and social services into America’s education system. Using Pennsylvania as a case study, Taylor traces the development of community-school “hub” models into today’s Full-Service Community Schools and examines proposed state legislation, federal grants, Medicaid funding, behavioral-health programs, social-emotional learning, student screening, data collection, and public-private community partnerships. She challenges parents and citizens to follow the laws, funding streams, partnerships, and data systems behind these programs and ask whether schools are being transformed from places of academic education into cradle-to-career centers for managing the needs of children, families, and entire communities.
