What happens when education is increasingly aligned with workforce development, lifelong learning, data tracking, and global Sustainable Development Goals? In this episode of The Reason We Learn, Common Core Diva Lynne Taylor joins Deb Fillman to examine the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and what they argue is an expanding connection between education and labor policy. The discussion follows the relationship between SDG 4 for education and SDG 8 for work, the Every Student Succeeds Act, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, Student Longitudinal Data Systems, workforce data initiatives, competency-based education, apprenticeships, and lifelong learning. Taylor and Fillman raise concerns about whether education is shifting away from academics and individual aspirations toward a system increasingly designed around workforce skills, economic objectives, data-driven outcomes, and internationally influenced policy.
