Attack on Free Speech – Warner Bill

What happens when governments, technology organizations, universities, media institutions, and policymakers become increasingly involved in determining what qualifies as trustworthy information? In this Common Core Diva presentation, Lynne Taylor examines free speech and government misinformation policies through the lens of the German Marshall Fund’s Geopolitics of Technology discussion and a Civic Information Handbook connected to researchers at the University of North Carolina. Taylor explores misinformation, disinformation and “malinformation,” technology-driven information campaigns, data mining, behavioral influence, MINDSPACE, Big Tech, higher education, and the role of policymakers in shaping the information environment. Her central concern is whether efforts promoted as combating false information could ultimately restrict free speech, freedom of thought, independent research, and citizens’ ability to challenge government narratives.
